Is it a good time to buy jadeite jewelry?
Absolutely. It's a buyer's market. Prices started going up around 1995, and peaked in 1998. Since then, prices have gone down. Jadeite prices have essentially followed the decline of the Hang Seng index. Now is also a good time to buy before the mainland Chinese market opens up. As the Chinese become richer in the next three to five years, collectors and investors from the mainland will probably start buying up jadeite, which is a very traditional Asian purchase. This will certainly push up prices, because there's a limited supply of the finest quality jadeite.

Christie's held an auction earlier this month. How did jadeite do? About 66% of the jadeite lots were sold. The smaller pieces did very well. For example, a bamboo-and-jadeite brooch sold for $5,769, which was double the presale estimate. The big pieces all sold just within their estimates, however, probably because there weren't a lot of buyers at the top end of the market. If there were no Sept. 11 attacks, the bidding would have been much better.

How much should you pay for a significant jadeite piece these days?
You could probably buy a very pretty piece for about $25,000. If it's rare and of high quality, it will appreciate in value [given today's low prices]. It could double or even triple. Design is very important. If the jadeite is part of a unique piece of modern jewelry, for example, that makes it more rare - and more desirable.

What about lower priced jadeite pieces in jewelry stores and jade markets?
You can buy jadeite [that are less brilliantly green] for about $400, but that won't give you as good an investment return. That kind of jadeite is mostly for your own personal enjoyment. Ultimately, buying jewelry is a very personal thing. Some collectors may not buy the highest grade of jadeite because they don't like it as much as they do other jewelry pieces [with less green jadeite] that they think are more beautiful.

How do you distinguish between top quality and lower quality jadeite?
No two jadeite pieces are the same. You need to look for color, transparency and clarity. A slight difference in the type of green makes a huge difference. The most valuable jadeite are pieces that have a brilliant saturation of green without artificial treatment. The more transparent jadeite is, the more valuable. And it must have a good, smooth texture. Age isn't necessarily important - after all, you can find lots of ugly pieces from the Qing Dynasty.

Pearls, unlike mined gems, are organic gems since they come from a living organism, the mollusk. Mollusks are soft-bodied marine animals with one or two shells. The other organic gems are coral, amber, ivory, and jet.

Did you know that pearls were one of the first gems to be valued by people? They could be worn without any of the polishing or cutting required by other gems - straight out of the shell! Until the 1920s when Mikimoto developed and marketed the cultured pearl, only natural pearls were available. But the market opened up when cultured pearls became available and pearls became accessible to a larger population.

Clasps can be a simple finding that closes and secures a bracelet or necklace. And often that is exactly the element that is needed to complete a piece of jewelry. Clasps may be for single, double, triple and more rows of pearls or gemstone beads. But a clasp may also be a jewelry element unto itself.

Singular clasps, often with gemstones and pearls, may be wrought in platinum, yellow gold or white gold. They may be whimsical, delicate pieces of art which compose the bracelet or necklace. Of course, unlike simple closures which are relegated to the back of the neck, the bejeweled clasp is often worn to be seen and therefore placed on the front or side.

It's all in the details, is so true particularly when relating to miniature works of art. And jewelry definitely falls into the miniature category.

Freshwater pearls come in a large selection of shapes, colors, and sizes. If you are careful to choose top quality freshwater pearls, they will also have high luster and even a play of colors and shimmer, otherwise called iridescence.

The thing about freshwater pearls is that they are far less expensive than the cultured pearls first developed by Mikimoto, the Japanese Akoya pearl. With the exception of the Biwa pearl which comes from Lake Biwa in Japan, most freshwater pearls come from China. Freshwater pearls require a shorter incubation period in the mollusk, a factor which contributes to their less expensive price. A unique and secret method of dyeing pearls while inside the shell has brought about good quality colored pearls. Not to be confused with natural black Tahitian pearls from the black lipped oyster, pearls that are dyed while still in the shell have a long-lasting rich color which does not fade or change.

Cultured Pearl Buying and Care Facts

Nacre is a layer of pearl which grows around the pearl. The longer the pearl is in the oyster or mollusk, the thicker the nacre becomes, imparting a luminous luster to the pearl. A sign of a pearl with thin nacre can be seen by signs of peeling around the hole where the pearl is strung. Dull, lifeless pearls are also a sign of a pearl which was harvested too early. Avoid pearls which are harvested too early, which although less expensive, have thin nacre, peel, and are lifeless and dull.

When buying a pearl bracelet or necklace, be sure the pearls are individually hand-knotted on silk thread. Individual knots between pearls protects them from rubbing one against the other and minimizes potential pearl loss in case the strand breaks or tears. Depending on the frequency of wear, pearls should be restrung by a reputable jeweler on a periodic basis in order to avoid having a pearl necklace or bracelet tearing or breaking. After wearing pearls wipe them with a soft cloth to eliminate oils or creams which would have been transferred from your skin to the pearls.
